admin October 2, 2023

As a busy mom, you’re always looking for simple, natural solutions to support your family’s well-being. One herb you may not have explored yet is goldenrod (Solidago). Goldenrod is a powerhouse herb known for its ability to support the urinary system, relieve inflammation, and even soothe allergies. Its bright yellow flowers and strong herbal reputation make it a great addition to your herbal toolkit.

Goldenrod can be used in many ways — as a soothing tea, in skin-care products, and even in syrups and salves that are easy to make at home. Let’s explore three simple recipes that can help you bring the benefits of Goldenrod into your everyday life. Whether you’re looking to support your family’s immune system, deal with a minor skin issue, or relieve seasonal discomforts, goldenrod is your ally.

The Benefits of Goldenrod

Before we dive into the recipes, let’s talk about why goldenrod is worth incorporating into your natural remedies. Goldenrod has a long history of use for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and diuretic properties.

It’s particularly helpful for:

  • Supporting the urinary system – Goldenrod is known to help flush out toxins and soothe bladder discomfort.
  • Reducing seasonal allergies – It can help clear congestion and ease sneezing during allergy season.
  • Soothing skin – Its anti-inflammatory properties are perfect for irritated skin or minor cuts.
  • Boosting immune function – Goldenrod can act as a gentle immune booster, helping your body naturally fight colds and other respiratory illnesses.

Here are three ways you can use Goldenrod in your home:

  1. Goldenrod Syrup (with Pure Cane Sugar)

This syrup is a delicious and easy way to make goldenrods accessible for your whole family. It’s perfect for soothing those allergies, supporting the immune system, and boosting overall vitality. Plus, kids love it, so it’s a great way to get them on board with natural remedies!

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup fresh or dried goldenrod flowers
  • 2 cups filtered water
  • 1 ½ cups pure cane sugar (or honey, if you prefer)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice (optional, for added vitamin C and taste)

Instructions:

Step 1: Combine the goldenrod flowers and water in a small saucepan. Bring to a simmer and let it steep for 20 minutes.

Step 2: Strain out the flowers using a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth, squeezing out the liquid.

Step 3: Return the liquid to the pot and add the pure cane sugar (or honey). Stir until fully dissolved.

Step 4: Add lemon juice for a zesty twist and extra vitamin C.

Step 5: Pour the syrup into a clean jar or bottle and store it in the refrigerator for up to 2-3 weeks.

How to Use:

  • Take 1-2 teaspoons daily to support the immune system, especially during cold and flu season.
  • Take 1 teaspoon up to 3 times daily for seasonal allergies to help clear congestion and reduce sneezing.
  • Add it to warm water or tea for a sweet and soothing drink.

This syrup is super easy to make and can be a great go-to for the whole family. You can also easily adjust the sweetness depending on your family’s preferences. If your little ones are prone to sniffles or seasonal allergies, this syrup is a natural and gentle way to provide relief.

  1. Goldenrod Salve

A Goldenrod salve is a lovely and useful addition to your family’s herbal first-aid kit. It’s perfect for minor cuts, scrapes, and irritated skin. Goldenrod’s anti-inflammatory and soothing properties help soothe redness and encourage cellular regeneration.

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup dried goldenrod flowers
  • 1/4 cup olive oil or coconut oil (or a blend)
  • 2 tablespoons beeswax pellets
  • 5-10 drops of lavender essential oil (optional for additional soothing)

Instructions:

Step 1: Combine the goldenrod flowers and oil in a double boiler. Gently heat for 30-60 minutes, stirring occasionally, to infuse the oil with the goldenrod’s herbal properties.

Step 2: Strain out the flowers using a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth and return the oil to the double boiler.

Step 3: Add the beeswax pellets and stir until melted and fully combined with the oil.

Step 4: Once the mixture is melted, remove from heat and add the lavender essential oil (if using).

Step 5: Pour into small tins or jars and allow to cool completely.

How to Use:

  • Apply a thin layer to minor cuts, scrapes, or skin irritations to encourage cellular regeneration and soothe redness.
  • It can also be used on bug bites or dry, inflamed skin areas.
  • Use as a soothing balm for kids after a day in the sun or to calm irritated skin.

This salve is perfect for the whole family! It’s gentle enough for babies and toddlers (just be sure to avoid open wounds) and effective for adults too. It’s a great way to use goldenrod in a practical, everyday way — especially when those bumps and bruises seem to appear out of nowhere.

  1. Goldenrod-Infused Bath Soak

This soothing bath soak is a wonderful way to unwind at the end of a long day, especially for those who deal with joint discomfort, muscle tension, or inflammation. The goldenrod flowers will infuse your bath with their properties, leaving you feeling relaxed and refreshed.

  • 1/4 cup dried lavender flowers (optional for extra relaxation)
  • 1/4 cup baking soda (helps soothe irritated skin)

Instructions:

Step 1: Combine the goldenrod, lavender, and Epsom salts in a jar or bowl.

Step 2: Add the baking soda and mix everything together.

How to use:

  • Simply pour about 1/4 cup of the mixture into a warm bath and swirl to dissolve.
  • Soak in the bath for 15-20 minutes to enjoy the soothing benefits of goldenrod and relax your muscles.

Plus, the Epsom salts help soothe sore muscles, while the goldenrod works its magic to calm inflammation. It’s a perfect way to de-stress after a busy day of caring for everyone else.
