Oil pulling is such a simple change you can make in your oral health routine — and yet, it’s so powerful. (Make it even easier with these oil pulling tablets!) Anyone can do this, and it only takes a few minutes. We consider it a “baby step” to better health!
Oil Pulling
This baby step has to do with dental health, and it will take 10 minutes of your morning and one single ingredient. That’s not too much to handle!
What’s the point?
Oil pulling is kind of like using mouth wash, only instead of a conventional product full of antibacterial junk, artificial flavors and colors, and other yucky stuff, you use pure coconut oil. It gets into the gums and between the teeth to pull out bacteria and clean your mouth naturally.
Some say it can even encourage a healthier overall body, because sometimes if something’s wrong in your body, it shows up in your mouth! You should do this on an empty stomach to encourage detox.
Oil pulling can:
- Reduce harmful bacteria in your mouth
- Reduce the likelihood of cavities
- Reduce or eliminate bad breath
- Whiten teeth
- Improve acne
- Reduce systemic inflammation
- …and more!
What You’ll Need
Oil pulling is super simple. You will need:
- A spoon
- Coconut oil (organic, virgin)
- A small cup
That’s it!
How to Do It
Use the spoon to scoop up a small amount of coconut oil, about 2 – 3 tsp. Put it in your mouth.
Let the oil melt (it should melt pretty quickly), then slowly swish it around your mouth for 10 – 15 minutes. Don’t do it hard, like when you use mouthwash, or your jaw muscles will get sore!
Swish very gently and slowly, all around your mouth, pulling it through your teeth. The oil will thin out, mix with saliva, get foamy.
After 10 minutes or so, spit the oil out. Many say to spit it in the toilet because it’s now full of bacteria and yucky stuff. Definitely don’t swallow!
Use the small cup to rinse your mouth out. Swish water a couple of times and spit out.
I usually follow up by brushing with Earthpaste.
One super simple habit to add to your healthy morning routine!
