7 Stress Reducing Herbs

admin December 10, 2012

During certain times of our lives, we can feel stressed out and overwhelmed. There are many things that you can do to reduce stress, and stress reducing herbs are good to add to your stress relief arsenal.

Here are seven herbs for you to consider:

1. Ashwaganda

Ashwaganda is calming and a tonic to replenish lost energy. It produces energy in a way that helps the body calm down and sleep. It helps the body take care of stress rather than masking it by maintaining normal adrenal levels. The adrenals get depleted when we are stressed. Ashwaganda also helps reduce cortisol levels in chronically stressed individuals.

2. Astragalus

Astragaus is called an adaptogen, meaning it is thought to help protect the body against various stresses, including physical, mental, or emotional stress.

 3. St. John’s Wort

Research suggests that St. John’s Wort increases the activity and prolongs the action of the brain chemicals serotonin and noradrenaline, in a similar manner to standard antidepressants, but with far fewer reported side effects.

4. Linden

Linden is an herb that comes from various species of Tilia, or lime tree. Flowers from two linden species (Tilia cordata and Tilia platyphyllos) were historically used to soothe nerves and treat health problems associated with anxiety.

5. Lemon balm

(Melissa officinalis), a member of the mint family, is considered a calming herb. Today, lemon balm is often combined with other calming, soothing herbs, such as valerian, chamomile, and hops, to help promote relaxation.

6. Skullcap

American skullcap is native to North America, but it is now widely cultivated in Europe and other areas of the world. It has been used for more than 200 years as a mild relaxant and as a therapy for anxiety, nervous tension, and convulsions.

 7. Kava

Kava is best known for its relaxing qualities. Kava is said to elevate mood, well being, and contentment, and produce a feeling of relaxation. Several studies have found that kava may be useful in the treatment of anxiety, insomnia, and related nervous disorders.

As with all herbs and supplements, please talk with your doctor or an herbal professional about possible side effects.

Do you use herbs to help with stress reduction?  Which ones do you recommend?
