The health benefits of bone broth are astounding, and it is surprisingly simple and affordable to make your own. Check out our chicken bone broth recipe or learn to make a perpetual bone broth. We might know how beneficial bone broth can be, but finding a consistent way to add it to our family’s diet is a different story. There are numerous ways to include it in your diet (check out our blog, 5 Ways to Get Your Daily Bone Broth). You can use it to make soup, rice, beans, or even just drink it straight with some sea salt. Today, I want to share my favorite way to add nutrient-dense bone broth to my diet (and also the easiest way to get children to drink it) – hot chocolate!

Who doesn’t love hot chocolate? If you were to look at your local grocery store, you would find tons of hot chocolate mixes and packets full of sugar, food dyes, and plenty of other food toxins you would rather avoid. But, rather than drinking something that may negatively impact your health, wouldn’t you rather serve your family an even more delicious treat loaded with nutrition? This bone broth hot chocolate recipe delivers big-time flavor and nutrition.

Obviously, the key ingredient in hot chocolate is the chocolate. To give this hot chocolate an even bigger nutritional boost, I make it with Earthley’s Cocoa Calm. I love Cocoa Calm for a couple of reasons.

  1. Cocoa Calm is made with non-alkalized cocoa powder. This process results in a cocoa powder with up to 3x the amount of antioxidants. Check out this study about how the alkalization process negatively affects cocoa.
  2. 2. Cocoa Calm contains 3 adaptogenic herbs – ashwagandha, rhodiola,  and eleuthero root.
  3. 3. It is absolutely delicious and kids will agree!

You want to start with a bland chicken bone broth. Do not add 40 cloves of garlic to your bone broth, unless you love chocolatey garlic. So, forgo the aromatics when you make the broth. You can also use a powder version of bone broth if you prefer.

If you want an even richer hot chocolate, you can use a mixture of 1/4 cup heavy cream and 1/2 cup milk. As always, feel free to substitute your favorite sweetener, but maple syrup works extremely well in this recipe. If you don’t have Cocoa Calm on hand, you can simply substitute your favorite cocoa powder.

*You can also add a scoop of collagen for even more nutritional value. Add a dollop of real whipped cream and/or a sprinkle of nutmeg or cinnamon for a truly luxurious treat.

Directions:

Step 1: Combine all ingredients in a pan.

Step 2: Bring pan to a simmer, stirring occasionally until completely combined.

Step 3: Pour (carefully) into a mug and enjoy!
