Recipe Collection: Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Lactation Cookies

I first developed this recipe when I was expecting my second baby and still breastfeeding my first — many years ago!  There are many reasons why these cookies are considered a galactagogue — that is, they support a healthy milk supply.

Brewer’s yeast and oats are both known particularly known to help with milk production.  Plus, making sure you get enough to eat in general is key.  Many nursing mothers are always hungry (probably because they need about 500 extra calories daily to make that milk).  If that sounds like you, you could add Earthley’s Cocoa Calm to this recipe for additional nutritional support (or if you just need a nice calming cookie recipe).

Beyond brewer’s yeast (which is not the same as baker’s yeast and can be found in the supplements section of the store), flax seed is another food that can help boost milk supply.  If you want, you can replace each egg with 1 tbsp. ground flax seed and 3 tbsp. water.

If you do not need a milk supply boost, these cookies are also just delicious and kinda sorta healthy. 🙂
