I first developed this recipe when I was expecting my second baby and still breastfeeding my first — many years ago! There are many reasons why these cookies are considered a galactagogue — that is, they support a healthy milk supply.
Brewer’s yeast and oats are both known particularly known to help with milk production. Plus, making sure you get enough to eat in general is key. Many nursing mothers find themselves so hungry (and they do need about 500 extra calories per day to make that milk).
Beyond the brewer’s yeast (which is not the same as baker’s yeast, and can be found in the supplements section of the store), flax seed is another food that can help boost milk supply. If you want, you can replace each egg with 1 tbsp. ground flax seed and 3 tbsp. water.
If you’re not in need of a milk supply boost, these cookies are also just delicious, and kinda sorta healthy. 🙂
