Herbs To Boost Fertility

While hoping to conceive our fourth child, I learned that I had developed endometrial polyps. After consulting with different providers– gathering wisdom among a Naturopath, Chiropractor, Master Herbalist, Nurse Midwife, and Ob-Gyn– and after much thought and prayer, my husband and I decided to move forward with an operative hysteroscopy.

Afterward, I was told it could take a while for my body to rebuild to be able to conceive again, and since we knew our family wasn’t complete, our physician wrote a letter of infertility as we pursued adoption.  I also decided to re-visit the Master Herbalist.

Even though  conception hadn’t come extremely quickly with the first three children, I did manage to conceive, and knew my body needed some help getting back in gear.

While the surgery provided a quick fix for the growths, I credit the herbs for speeding the healing process, enabling us to conceive our fourth baby less than a month after the surgery!

What herbs did my Herbalist recommend?

  • Each day I drank a cup or two of Chaparral tea, to help cleanse my body of impurities or toxins.
  • A custom blend of Chaste Tree and Wild Yam were mixed into a tincture. I took several drops each day, as directed by my Naturopath. Both of these herbs may be recommended to help balance LH and FSH levels, as well as other reproductive issues in women.

Imagine my surprise, when after putting aside the idea of more biological children, I learned that we were indeed expecting our fourth baby!  What a delightful shock!

While these herbs helped me, I know other women have with their own unique needs, so I asked my friend Jill, of Jill’s Home Remedies, to share her own findings to help women get their hormones and/or fertility back on track.

In her own words:

I knew I was dealing with infertility when a few years went by and I wasn’t expecting another baby.  I wondered what would cause me to suddenly face infertility when I did not have problems conceiving my other 3 children.

I came across information about imbalanced hormones, with one of the symptoms being infertility.  After realizing I fell into the category of being too high in testosterone, I saw that imbalanced hormones were likely my problem.  I began to research different herbs that helped to balance the hormones naturally.  I decided to use red clover, saw palmetto and fenugreek.

I get many questions on how long to take hormone balancing herbs.  These herbs have other healthy properties and can be taken on a daily basis for a while.  Each person has their own level of imbalanced hormones, so I recommend taking the herbs for at least two to four months, or until your symptoms subside.

Let’s look at a few of the other health benefits of the three herbs I took:

  • Red Clover ~ relaxes nerves, fights cancer and purifies blood.
  • Fenugreek ~ helps allergies, digestion, ulcers, coughs and headaches.
  • Saw Palmetto ~ benefits all glandular tissue, helps reproductive organs, and helps the body get rid of excess mucus from the head, sinus and lungs.

A few other great supplements to balance hormones, nourish your reproductive organs and get your body on track is the HB Formula from Mountain Meadow Herbs and Female Reproductive Formula by Dr. Christopher.  I am very impressed with these companies and their formulas!

I do realize that there is more than one reason that a person deals with infertility, but this is what worked for me.  In less than a month after beginning the herbal program, I found out I was expecting our fourth precious baby.  Whether you are experiencing infertility, imbalanced hormones or other female reproductive problems, these herbs are a great, nourishing choice on the right track!

  1. After using Clomid for our first two children, we tried Vitex. After 2-3 months of semi-religiously taking it (and some days forgetting it) we had our first surprise pregnancy!!!! We had only hoped the Vitex would help regulate my hormones so we could start trying, we never expected it to seal the deal 🙂

  2. Fenugreek is a great herb for health reasons! Also, redclover is very good at getting away from acne as well. I support your decision to use herbs to help as it has helped us for our last child.
