DIY: Postpartum Tea for Depression

Similar to the after-birth discomforts discussed in our cramp tincture, another common issue following birth is depression caused by shifting hormones.

Some mothers experience full-blown postpartum depression, while others experience mild symptoms. Either way, this postpartum depression tea can help balance your hormones and lift your spirit, but first, let’s discuss the benefits.

Benefits of the Herbs

This tea blend combines four herbs, all of which play a specific role in overcoming postpartum depression.

Licorice root is used because it favorably affects hormonal balance. Additional health benefits of licorice root include:

  • May reduce acid reflux and indigestion
  • May help manage peptic ulcers
  • May provide menopause symptom relief
  • ​​May improve fasting blood sugar and diabetes
  • May support respiratory health
  • May support oral health
  • May aid in weight loss
  • Anticancer properties

Red raspberry leaf tones the uterus and ovaries and increases available calcium. Additional health benefits of red raspberry leaves include:

  • Rich in antioxidants
  • Antioxidant properties
  • May help relieve premenstrual symptoms (PMS)
  • Promotes a healthy pregnancy
  • May help shorten labor
  • May reduce instances of childbirth complications

Rosemary leaves increase milk flow, add calcium, and tone the liver. Additional health benefits of rosemary include:

  • Rich in antioxidants
  • Antimicrobial properties
  • Anti-inflammatory properties
  • May lower blood sugar levels
  • May improve mood, memory, and brain health

Skullcap is another source of calcium, nerve strengthener, and soother. Prolonged use of skullcap produces calm emotions. Additional health benefits of skullcap include:

  • May promote sleep and relieve insomnia

  • May support heart health

Postpartum Tea for Depression

Ingredients: 

  • 1/2 ounce dried, shredded licorice root
  • 1 ounce dried, crumbled red raspberry leaf 
  • 1 ounce dried, finely cut rosemary leaves 
  • 1 ounce dried, cut skullcap

Directions:

Step 1: To make this tea, combine the herbs well and store in an airtight container.

Step 2: Add 2 teaspoons to 1 cup of boiling water when ready to consume. 

This brew is particularly interesting and strong tasting and smelling. Drink two or more cups daily for several weeks or up to two months.
