Syntax also helps establish the setting as being sometime in the first half of the twentieth century in the rural South despite the fact the book does not provide any historical facts to determine an actual time line. Symbolism Walker takes symbolism to the extreme in her novel.
The most obvious use of symbolism is of course the color purple. Purple has always been associated with royalty and beauty in general but in the novel it is the predominant theme.
At the end of the novel, Celie is giving Shug a tour of her remodeled home and she shows her new room which is painted purple. This shows her completely journey and how she now recognizes her own beauty and perceives herself as being beautiful.
Both Shug and Sofia act as foils but Sofia is more predominant. Although both Sofia and Celie are young uneducated black women in the Southern United States their attitudes are as different as night and day.

Sofia is strong and independent and does not allow herself to be walked over as Celie does. Sofia is also not afraid to stand up for her rights while Celie is not even aware she has rights to stand up for. This contrast of attitudes helps the reader better understand both characters and their own personal journeys of self-discovery in this novel. Share this:.]
