Orange-Glazed Apple Dumplings

Ingredients

Whole Wheat Crescent Roll Ingredients:

  • 1 Tbsp. active dry yeast dissolved in 1/4 cup very warm water until it's foamy and dissolved
  • 1/4 cup butter softened
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 3 eggs
  • 3/4 tsp. salt
  • 4 1/2 cups whole wheat flour

Orange-Glazed Apple Dumplings Ingredients:

  • 8 large or 16 small crescent rolls
  • 3-5 apples I use whatever kind I have available! My original recipe calls for Granny Smith.
  • 1 stick butter
  • 1 cup honey
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • cinnamon to taste
  • 1/2-1 cup orange juice depending on how much orange taste you prefer

Instructions

Whole Wheat Crescent Roll Directions:

  • Using a mixer, beat all the ingredients except the flour. Slowly mix in the flour.
  • Knead dough well. Let rise to double in size in a bowl for about an hour or so (cover the bowl with a light, clean towel).
  • Punch the dough down. Divide into two. Roll each piece of dough into a large circle about 1/8″ to 1/4″ thick.
  • Cut the dough like a pizza, making 16 small or 8 large rolls per circle.

Orange-Glazed Apple Dumplings Directions:

  • Peel, core, and thinly slice apples.
  • Wrap each roll around 4-5 slices of apple. Place each apple bundle in a 9 x 13-inch dish.
  • In a saucepan, melt the butter and add the honey and vanilla. Stir until mixed well.
  • Spoon mixture over apple bundles. Pour orange juice evenly over bundles. (I am curious how lemon juice or even apple cider vinegar would taste in this recipe in place of the orange juice.)
  • Sprinkle bundles with cinnamon. Bake at 350ºF for 30-40 minutes.
