I remember not really caring for it in high school because it was yet another book that I had to read for an assignment, but it was always a book that seemed to pop up everywhere after I had read it. Speak follows the story of Melinda, a freshman in high school, who go here herself isolated from her peers and struggling to find her Symbolization in Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson in the jungle that is high school. She is awkward, shy, and berated by the girls who used to be her friends. She tries to make her way through the school year quietly and undetected, afraid of drawing more attention to herself than necessary.

She already has a target on her back, though, because here a party that happened over the summer — one in which Melinda called the cops and had it broken up. On the surface, her peers think she did it because she was a coward, a tattle-tale, a loser. But the reality of the situation was much, much worse. After having a couple drinks, Andy forces himself onto Melinda in the backyard of the house. After he is done, she gets up, confused as to what had just happened, and does the only thing she can think to do — call the cops and shut the entire party down. After she calls them, she leaves, never telling anyone what had actually happened at the party.

Melinda is worried for her, but is afraid that if she says anything it will just make things worse for her. But It has a way of making sure Melinda never forgets what happened.
