Teaching this course also involves confronting some hard truths about respected figures in our discipline, like Flinders Petrie, and their involvement with mechanisms of imperial control or eugenics. The fancy dress party was a favourite form of amusement for foreigners in Egypt in the s and s. Fancy dress in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries offered revellers an opportunity to step out outside their everyday life, but also to make a statement about how they saw themselves.
