Teachers and staff were collaborative and supportive. The students I had at Rock middle were among the best I had in my 33 years in the classroom.

One of my favorite things each year was in prepping students for the science fair, by doing the entire process at school, in class. Students often time did not realize we were "doing" science fair because I did it via teaching the science method and doing frequent hands on activities.

This increased participation in the fair and assured that the students, NOT uncle Joe the engineer, did the project. One year, our 6th graders took awards in 5 out of 6 categories at the school system fair.

We had students progress as far as the regional and state science fairs, Leadership permitted my doing "messy" science activities and encouraged our participation in things like Odyssey of the Mind and NASA science contests. The toughest part of the job was finding time and energy to do all the things we wanted and I needed to do, but the grandest part was in watching student interest and attitude towards both science and social studies over the course of a school year.
