Antonio has failed to put forward the money he owes and Shylock demands his pound of flesh. Essentially reprising the company's inaugural production of , this version cuts virtually everything but the scenes involving moneylender Shylock and his strange contract to extract a "pound of flesh" from indebted merchant Antonio. Shylock is the play's most famous character, a Jew driven to seek vengeance for his treatment at the hands of the play's Christian characters. Shakespeare's ambivalent treatment of Shylock, sometimes viewed sympathetically but also plainly the story's villain, has generated much discussion and controversy. Director John Johnston 's concept is to have Shylock's story enacted by two prisoners at Auschwitz, presumably as an exercise enforced by their captors. Slight changes from the staging include the addition of a third actor in the mostly silent role of a Nazi guard observing the proceedings, finally chiming in at the close to reiterate Shylock's comeuppance. As before, the show opens with an extended pantomime of the two prisoners sorting heaps of clothes, shoes and other possessions confiscated from fellow doomed internees.
