From the first scene the issue of racism is tackled head on; as it shows the Jew; Shylock being spat upon by his counterpart Antonio the Merchant. This cursory and common place way in which the issue of racism is portrayed pervades the film and justifies Shylocks strong reasons for demanding his pound of flesh.
The anti-Jewish bigotry propels the film, as the introduction titles give a background to the marginal status and civic oppression of the Jewish population.

The court scene can be said to be the most dramatic as this is where the conflict between Antonio and Shylock is resolved. The issue of racism is once again questioned.
Antonio has failed to put forward the money he owes and Shylock demands his pound of flesh. There is even a visual division within the physical outline of the court, were this one side populated by the Jews, noticeable by their red caps, and the other side populated by the Christians. There is hardly any mingling of the two races in this physical space. Facebook Twitter Email 8 1of8Classical Theatre Company's concept treatment of "The Merchant of Venice" changes the setting to Auschwitz and its primary characters to two prisoners. Essentially reprising the company's inaugural production of , this version cuts virtually everything but the scenes involving moneylender Shylock and his strange contract to extract a "pound of flesh" from indebted merchant Antonio. Shylock is the play's most famous character, a Jew driven to seek vengeance for his treatment at the hands of the play's Christian characters. Shakespeare's ambivalent treatment of Shylock, sometimes viewed sympathetically but also plainly the story's villain, has generated much discussion and controversy. Director John Johnston 's concept is to have Shylock's story enacted by two prisoners at Auschwitz, presumably as an exercise enforced by their captors. Slight changes from the staging include the addition of a third actor in the mostly silent role of a Nazi guard observing the proceedings, finally chiming in at the close to reiterate Shylock's comeuppance. Home Essays Merchant of Venice Film The major conflict occurs when a man named Antonio Venetian merchant fails to pay off a loan to a greedy Jewish money loaner known as Shylock who demands a pound of flesh from Antonio in return. Antonio and his friends take a journey through friendship, love, and hatred in an attempt to free him of his pound of flesh fate induced by Shylock. Imagine yourself sitting in the master minds of directors Michael Radford and John Sichel while they are directing their adaptations of the play. Imagine experiencing their unique ideas first hand looking through their eyes and listening to their silent thoughts. You ask yourself how so many ideas run through their minds and what their intents are; is one director more creative than the other? The choices Sichel makes when directing his film seem to make his characters more empowered. Sichel also draws attention to his characters more when Portia and Nerissa are accusing Gratiano and Bassanio of giving away their rings to other women. This is shown through the characters actions and how the use of light has an effect on the viewer.
