Right away we are introduced to two opposite figures. One who will tell the event while relaying his own perspectives even though the poem is not about him.
The other is his father and is described extensively through his actions and how he is treated. In the first stanza the narrator focuses on the father who is outside working hard in even in cold conditions. But in the second stanza he talks of the warmth and anger which is often associated with burning or intense heat.
Through this an many other devices we are introduced to the dual reality that exists in every home. His use of repetition also increases his authenticity. We can predict he is now a dad from the quote above. Being a father himself he is better understanding of the sacrifices and grave reality that comes from being a parent. Thanks to this we may predict that our narrator is going through something similar in his household except now he is in the opposite position.

I know this poem is about Hayden and his father, but it those winter sundays robert hayden felt as though I was reading about my Father and me. It felt like Hayden was looking into my soul and my past all at the same time. This is the first time that See more have had a real connection with a poem like this, just reading this poem made me want to go and hug and tell my Father I love and appreciate him.
One part of the poem that really resonated with me was the last two lines, "What did I know, What did I know of love's austere and lonely offices?
It also shows a little bit of the father's perspective, because as it said in the poem, "No one ever thanked him" and I feel like Hayden now realized how lonely his father was, loving the way he did. This makes me think of my father, is he lonely like Hayden's father?
