The three stumble upon a massive hole in the middle of a forest, naturally their curiosity gets the best of them and they go inside. When they come out they discover that they have amazing abilities like super strength and telekinesis.

The movie's marketing campaign was executed so skillfully that many audience members went in thinking it was a true story. Because of that, The Blair Witch Project managed to completely immerse its audience within its grounded and contained story. Watching the movie makes one feel as if they are trapped within the confines of the forest alongside the documentary crew. While no other movie could recreate the same marketing strategy that Blair Witch pulled off, subsequent found footage horror films found success by hitting on those same beats. The genre works simply because its narrative style immerses the audience so far into the story that it puts the audience directly in the shoes of the people experiencing the horror. That fear envelopes the audience, mimicking the effect of claustrophobia.

Director Josh Trank was reportedly a nightmare on the set of 's disastrously dark Fantastic Four reboot. But he was a young director fresh off the success of 's subversive found footage superhero movie Chronicle, so some outsized ego was inevitable. That said, the film's abhorrence of its own fandom was a lot less excusable. It's a big claim to make, but it is painfully epitomized in the brutally misjudged first appearance of the Thing's famous catchphrase in this gloomy reboot. The film gives this iconic line to the Thing's abusive older brother before a hard-to-watch sequence wherein he beats him up, a bizarre and tonally disastrous decision that permanently derailed this attempt to revive the franchise. It was the moment fans knew that this reboot had no chance of capturing the spirit of the original, and with any luck it'll be the moment director Trank returns to when he decides that attempting to shoot a harrowing depiction of abuse isn't the time to smugly repurpose beloved lines from children's media.
