The author, I mean I am so aggravated with this book i dreamt kissing my crush if you skip over the parts where "Moo" just kind of rambles and there is LOTS of thisthe book is actually quite good. Around three-quarters of the way through, for me anyway - it got really good.
As many others have written, the book is about an overweight 15 year old boy who is bullied at school. Because he doesn't have many friends, he spends a lot of his time at a local "bridge" - not a bridge for cars, but a "walking" bridge. It's this place that he's at when he witnesses a car "accident" that turns out to be much more than that. Moo is then questioned by the police, and he is mightily confused when some of these policemen would like him to tell the truth, while others would rather he embellished upon his story a bit.
You get REALLY interested in this book, as I did, and then, as I was getting closer to the end - say, four to five pages away - I said to myself, something better happen soon here. I don't see how this is going to end in the few pages that hwo left. The accused murderer is a famous gangster who has been set up by others to take the fall. The gangster is a cruel man who deserves to take the fall but the boy knows that he did not murder this man even though he has killed many others. Moo, as his school mates call Mike, truthfully tells his story to the police.
He becomes a sought after witness that both the police and the gangster seek to influence. One link the policemen is determined to pin the murder on the gangster, visiting Mike again and again to convince him so. The gangster threatens him and his family. I found getting into the mind of a year-old difficult at first but as the story progressed I empathized with this insecure boy ffels has suddenly become center of attention. When he bursts into tears on the witness stand I cried with him. I'm not sure that I liked the ending but it was certainly in keeping with the character. Brooks does a remarkable job here telling the story from Mike's perspective from beginning to end.
