The Real Science of COVID

admin October 8, 2021

This morning, I opened the NYT daily newsletter (I like to read news from many sources, to see what the world is thinking) and their top story was about COVID.  They were talking about how COVID cases have declined nearly 40% since the beginning of September, and that mitigation efforts like masks and social distancing have a smaller impact on the behavior of COVID than we previously thought, and we need to be cautious not to vilify people who react or respond differently.

This makes me frustrated and angry.

The truth is, many of us have been saying this all along — and we were dismissed.  We were told we didn’t care about others, we were selfish, we were anti-science.  We were told we didn’t deserve to be a part of society.  People ended real-life friendships with us because of our — very reasonable and moderate — position.

I just want to set the record straight on all of this.

What We (Actually) Believed in the Beginning

When COVID first became known in early 2020, many of us — including myself — approached it cautiously.  We watched to see what would happen.  We supported choosing to stay home if going out wasn’t necessary (although we did not support arbitrary business shut-downs and government orders).

The truth was, there was so much unknown.  We had to wait and see.

Once we knew a little more, we supported a moderate approach, which included:

  • Keeping schools and businesses open
  • Closing nursing homes to and other high-risk spaces
  • Taking extra precautions (gloves, masks, etc.) in high-risk spaces
  • Encouraging people to stay home if sick
  • Washing hands more frequently
  • Cleaning high-touch surfaces (but not with disinfectants that can destroy the microbiome)
  • Exploring nutrient deficiencies and natural remedies that could reduce the risk of severe infection

We recognized, once there was data available, that the people who were most at-risk were the elderly and those with underlying conditions.  Young, healthy people were not dying in high numbers.  A nuanced approach was the most prudent.

For this, we were vilified as “grandma killers” and “selfish people who think a new haircut is more important than human life.”

This was never about a denial of COVID, or that people were getting sick and dying.  It was about balancing mitigating the risks of catching COVID alongside the risks of mental health concerns, rising violence (domestic and otherwise), abuse and neglect, loss of income (which is devastating for those who don’t make much), loss of educational opportunities, and so much more.  It doesn’t pay to be laser-focused on only one issue, to the neglect of all others.  We see what has happened when you do that!

And yet.  This view was considered “radical” and “ridiculous.”  (Now, it is considered by most to be the prudent approach.)

Humans Have Little Impact on COVID

Viruses are viruses.  They don’t play by human rules, and we know very little about what causes them to surge or fade away.  All of the arbitrary and draconian rules at the beginning of the pandemic (and those that continue now) are an attempt to control something that really cannot be controlled and is not even understood.

Cases have surged and fallen in two-month cycles since the beginning.  This is irrespective of lockdowns, social distancing, or mask behaviors.  It has happened in nearly every country.  It has not been seasonal (i.e. not cases rising in the cold months and receding in the warm months).

We saw cases surge in the US starting in early July this year (again).  Every country with a major, similar outbreak that had started earlier had receded after about two months.  We had every reason to believe it would happen here, too.

But the time when the outbreak should start receding coincided with back-to-school time, and the fall months.  Experts theorized that we would need to double down on masks and social distancing but that we should expect cases to surge even higher.

That didn’t happen.  Cases did begin to recede in early September, and are down nearly 40% already (as of the second week of October).  It shows that the virus is truly not very tied to human actions, it does what it does, and we don’t fully understand why.

It’s also not tied to vaccination rates.  Some countries with the highest vaccination rates saw the most cases, while other countries with low vaccination rates saw many fewer.  It casts serious doubt on the singular focus on vaccination as a solution to the pandemic.

The bare truth is: this is something we can’t control.  It is a virus.  It does what it does.  We can engage in magical thinking and pretend that if we snap our fingers twice and put on a third mask as we leave our homes that we’ll be safe, but there are really no guarantees.

The Science is Complex

Explaining the science we do have would be far more than one blog post could encompass.  Here’s a very brief summary of what is out there:

  • Those with low vitamin D, zinc, and selenium levels were more likely to have severe COVID or die (source, source, source, source, source, source, source)
  • Almost all severe cases and deaths were in people who were over 65 and/or had multiple underlying conditions
  • There are herbs and natural remedies for COVID that can mitigate symptoms and reduce the risk of deaths that were studied in other countries, but considered non-existent in the US (source, source, source, source, source, source, source, source, source, source, source, source…and there are so so many more)
  • Children experienced COVID almost universally as a bad cold, or even asymptomatically (fewer than 1000 children country-wide have died of COVID in 2 years)
  • The COVID vaccine has more adverse event reports than all other vaccines combined over a 10-year period (source)
  • The COVID vaccine immunity wanes rapidly and is lower than expected
  • Long-term societal stresses due to unfair and arbitrary COVID policies are serious (rising gun violence, domestic and child abuse, mental health crises, serious loss of educational gains, loss of income and homelessness, disruption to the jobs market and supplies, and more)
  • Mask-wearing can be beneficial in specific situations if done correctly, but overuse of masks and poor washing/changing of masks can cause skin and oral infections and other issues

This is serious. Many studies are linked here.  If you look at the parts about nutrient deficiencies and available natural remedies, it is clear that we did not use all the tools at our disposal, and that tens of thousands of people who didn’t have to die, did, because of it.  Is that akin to manslaughter?  Honestly, if we have things that would make a difference in outcomes but they weren’t profitable or taken seriously by the mainstream US, isn’t that a problem?  They can’t claim it was really about “saving lives” if they refused to use cheap, readily available tools that would have changed the outcome for so many people.

And because many people are unaware of most of this, and are acting from a place of fear, they vilify people who do not do what the mainstream says.  People have ended relationships over this.

Further, a lot of people have been censored or kicked off of social media for stating verifiable facts that don’t go along with the mainstream’s narrative.  Some sites have literally blocked articles from medical journals!  People don’t even know they’re being manipulated and that they’re not seeing the whole truth.

It has led to unconscionable hate in society, and many suggestions that those who do not go along with the mainstream ways should not receive any medical care, should be fired from jobs, and should be barred from public spaces.  In some areas of the country, these things are actually happening….

Why It Matters

This is tired, and it may feel like I’m just rehashing things.  But it needs to be said for those who see it and feel like they’re alone, as well as for those who don’t see it and feel it’s rational to continue to take peoples’ rights away.

Many of us have been aware that this is a complex topic all along — and that we had options to protect our health that weren’t masks and vaccines.  We knew that there were so many angles to look at, that the science was sometimes conflicting or not what the mainstream said, that the response in general needed to be nuanced and with a message of hope and unity.

If you see how awful this has all been, and how the response of some in society has caused further problems, you are not alone.  It’s been frustrating to be considered the scapegoats and to be told we’re stupid and ridiculous and pathetic (even when the most educated among us have been the most able to see what’s going on).

Honestly, this has been one of the most frustrating times to ever walk through.  It’s not just the virus itself, and the uncertainty that it presented.  It’s how society responded to it.  How people treated one another.  The arbitrary and varied response from government.  The government officials who engaged in hate and blame.  The violence towards those who think differently.  The branding of people as “domestic terrorists” and hate groups for trying to speak up and finally be heard.

I never thought I would see something like this happen.

But, there is a bit of light.  Even though the media (and social media) are filled with people who are hard and rude and hateful, the real world is not.  I talk to a lot of people who do understand that this is a nuanced situation and there’s a lot more going on than we’re told.  That it’s complex.  That natural health is part of the solution.  More people are seeing what’s happening here, and that this is not okay.

We need to keep speaking up and sharing these truths and the real science and supporting medical freedom.  Now more than ever.  We are the ones who are right, and the ones who respect others doing what they need to do.  We are the ones who must prevail in this fight for control of society — because we’re not trying to control others.

How do you feel about the whole COVID situation?

  1. Love this article. You have set out so clearly the whole covid saga and described how mainstream.policies surrounding the virus have resulted in division, anxiety, anger and hatred. And we need to keep reminding ourselves that opportunistic governments and corporations have taken advantage of this time to control us and profit from us…..

  2. Here here! I wholeheartedly agree and can attest to the mistreatment received during this time. We have to stand up against these bullies especially with govt and employers and do it loudly and in unison. The only way to stop a bully is to stand up against them!

  3. It’s good to see that there are others who understand how this whole ordeal has been over exaggerated. Yes, people have died and are dieing and that really sucks. I wish it wasn’t happening just as much as the next decent human but the truth is none of us are getting out of this life alive. More people die from alcohol consumption every year than covid yet covid is a pandemic and alcohol is not. There is a 97% – 99% recovery rate of covid yet it is still considered a pandemic. I really wish more people would do their research as you have and open their eyes to how we’re being manipulated. Thank you for linking so many sources so more people can do just that.

  8. Thank you for sharing your opinions regarding COVID19. I do not 100% agree with everything you shared but that is OK. It is definitely something that is new and we are continuing to learn about. While the original virus may not have been as “serious”, viruses do mutate and can get more lethal as in the Delta variant and may mutate even more. I do not see this as a way for the government to “control” us by any means. Government officials are doing the best they can with this new and yes deadly virus. I am fully vaccinated and plan on getting the booster shot. My daughter in law not only has asthma but, at 30 years old has been diagnosed with Stage 3 colon cancer and will be super susceptible to COVID19 while undergoing chemotherapy. I am PRO-LIFE before and after birth. Wearing a mask, when necessary and getting vaccinated are the most PRO LIFE and unselfish things one can do to protect those who can do little to protect themselves. I used to be a quasi-anti-vaxer and had been accused in my life of being anti-government. But, I did my own research of facts and legit sources and decided that this is, currently, the best weapon we have against COVID19 until something better comes along. If we had all been unified in the beginning, maybe we wouldn’t have had as many shutdowns or maybe could have reduced the spread sooner and been on the road to recovery much sooner. I may be called a “sheep” to which I say….”bahhhh”. LIFE comes before liberty. You can’t have liberty without life if you or your loved ones are dead. Alcoholism isn’t contagious. COVID19 is. I enjoy everything else on your site…but do disagree with some of your opinions on COVID19. Thank you for what you do. Have a wonderful day. In PEACE, LOVE & HAPPINESS.

  9. You are absolutely correct! I started following the virus in late 2019 and knew it wasn’t what the main stream media and globalists (including my employer) were saying it was. It is good versus evil and I feel we are in a spiritual war. Thankfully many people are waking up to the lies of main stream media, our government, the three letter agencies and many others.

  11. Great article. I appreciate your information as I know I can trust the source. I am in the middle of recovery from Covid and pneumonia. I ended up in the ER needing fluids and some O2 but thankfully, I didn’t need to be admitted. I’m recovering using herbal tea and supplements. My vitamin D levels were extremely high, too. This has been a major inconvenience but that is all. An inconvenience. Not to say that it wasn’t fun. I was really sick and don’t wish that on anyone. I am glad now that I have natural immunity. BTW, even though the dr’s told me I was wrong, I fully believe that I got it from my husband whose job forced him to get the vax. 1 week after he got it, my kids started to get it one by one. I was the last one to get it and I got it the worse, probably due to my age. Kids all recovered fine, even my 22 yr old. I share this to say that all your bullet points above, we’ve proven. I homeschool so my kids didn’t pick it up at school. We mostly stay home because that is just way things are in our home. Anyway, just some of my ramblings. Thanks for your article.

  12. Thank you for sharing. I do believe the fear-mongering has been excessive, but they trying to fill 24 hrs talking about something. It doesn’t seem to matter how it will affect people’s mental health, and that saddens me. I definitely don’t believe in the vaccines to protect me better than boosting my immune system. I plan to start taking what I am missing from my regimine that you listed.

  13. Thank you for this thoughtful, balanced, sourced article. You have articulated my thoughts and feelings so well that I started crying reading this. Thank you for bringing people together when so many are dividing. My husband and I pastor a church and my heart has hurt over the hatred, confusion, and divisiveness everywhere. Fear is the greatest enemy. Thank you again!
