Chiropractic Care: The Unconventional {Back to School} Preventative Health Measure

admin August 20, 2013

When it comes to going back to school, we think about healthy lunches and supplements to boost those little immune systems. But have you ever thought about visiting a chiropractor? You may want to add chiropractic care to your back-to-school list.

Chiropractic Care: The Unconventional {Back-to-School} Preventative Health Measure

It’s back to school time and whether you have children in a physical school setting or not, chances are germs are going to be flying around.  School hasn’t even officially started in my region yet, but viruses are already making their way through families we know.

With this in mind, it’s not a bad idea to stock up on holistic health remedies and tidy up the diet if things have gone lax over the summer as they are wont to do.

In addition, another healthy habit to consider before illness strikes is chiropractic care. You may think chiropractic care only applies to those who have serious back injuries or to pro sports players. But actually, chiropractic care can help with migraines, acid reflux, ear infections, and digestive issues, among others!

How Does Chiropractic Care Help with General Health and Wellness?

To put it plainly, when your spine is out of line, or misaligned, your immune system can become more depressed, putting you at greater risk to become ill. Scientifically speaking, “neural dysfunctions due to spinal misalignments are stressful to the body and cause abnormal changes that lead to a poorly coordinated immune response” (source).

Dr. Vic Naumov, DC, CCSMS, explains, “Chiropractic corrects spinal abnormalities called vertebral subluxations that result in interference of the nervous system by placing pressure on nerves. Since the nervous system controls all functions of the body, including the immune system, chiropractic care can have a positive effect on immune function” (source).

When things are not performing properly in your nervous system, it automatically affects your immune system’s ability to fight off infection, and vice versa.

How Legit is Chiropractic Care?

In a study by Ronald Pero, Ph.D., 107 individuals who had received long-term chiropractic care showed a 200% greater immune competence than those who had not received chiropractic care.  Additionally, they had a 400% greater immune competence than people with cancer or other serious diseases! What Does Chiropractic Care Look Like?

I take my family including my two small kids to the chiropractor quite often, usually every other week and sometimes weekly. I have a very active little boy, who tumbles and falls. He naturally gets out of alignment from these falls. Correcting the subluxations is key to not only helping him feel better, but also to keep his nervous and immune systems in check.  A common question I hear is, “But does it hurt? How do they adjust children?” all the while cringing, imagining the “snap, crackle, pop” sound on their darling angels.

My children have been adjusted since birth, and I always tell them that chiropractors use only fingertip pressure when adjusting children.  Their bodies are much more delicate than our adult bodies. They hardly need the same amount of pressure to correct subluxations.

Here’s an example of what an adjustment on a small child might look like:

Keep in mind, each chiropractor is different, and just like a medical doctor, may use different modalities and treatments.  You may need to try a few out before you find one you love!  Ask around for recommendations from friends, or call your local birth center for recommendations.

So, do you see a chiropractor? Would you, if you haven’t before?

  1. Yes, I see a chiropractor and my kids have been adjusted since birth, including my preemie to help with her reflux and allergies and vascular issues. It makes a HUGE difference to get them adjusted to keep them healthy, and to keep their little bodies injury free when they are learning to walk and are falling constantly.

    Great article!!! 😀

  2. What are some things to ask for with a chiro for a child?
We have Chip (BCBS) and my 4.5 year old has a posture issue that I would like looked into.
