Pregnancy is a special time that requires special self-care. Common ailments sometimes require a different approach to make sure the solution is safe for mama and baby. Many items should be used with caution during pregnancy, especially over-the-counter medicines.
Thankfully, one of my favorite essential oils is pregnancy-safe and can serve many purposes:
I have a history of stressing out, especially during pregnancy. Not good for me or baby. Thankfully, I’ve got it (mostly) under control now, thanks to prayer and meditation, greatly simplifying my life and natural remedies. My favorite remedy for stress relief is a blend of lavender and frankincense essential oils. Simply put a drop of each in the palm of your hand, rub them together, then deeply inhale. Rub the oils on your forehead and the back of your neck. Apply in the morning and as needed throughout the day.
Calming for Sleep
Lavender essential oil comes in handy a lot around bed time. Not only do I use it on our kiddos to help them calm down before sleep, but I use it on myself as well. When I was pregnant, I had a very hard time sleeping and sometimes, I still do. Thankfully, lavender is very calming and helps me sleep better. Apply a drop to your forehead or the bottoms of your feet, add a drop to your pillow or diffuse it in the air.
Burns and Wounds
Does anyone else get more clumsy during pregnancy, or was that just me? Bumps, cuts, burns, bruises, I did it all. Thankfully, pure lavender essential oil is a great remedy for small cuts and burns. (For all of those bruises, try this arnica balm to help those heal faster.) Just apply one drop of lavender essential oil to the affected area to ease pain and speed healing.
I spent a lot of time in the bath when I was pregnant and immediately postpartum. I even had two of my babies in the water. There’s something about water that’s very soothing. I loved that it took the stress off my back. To get the most out of your baths, add 2 cups of epsom salts and 2 drops of lavender essential oil. The epsom salts contain magnesium, which your skin will absorb and the lavender essential oil will help you relax further.
Before I learned about natural health, I took over-the-counter pain relievers. During pregnancy, of course, what I could take was seriously limited. Thankfully, lavender essential oil is a safe remedy whether you’re pregnant or not. To treat headaches, lavender essential oil is works best when combined with either frankincense or peppermint essential oils. I prefer the frankincense because it doubles for stress relief. Simple swipe a drop of each across your forehead and temples – one drop of each should cover it all. Once the headache is under control, you can try to figure out what caused it – lack of food, water, etc.
