Most people get pretty overwhelmed trying to change their diets, especially if they are used to eating whatever sounds good without thought of what”s in what they are eating.

A big reason many people do not think they can eat healthy is because of cost or being overwhelmed at the thought of trying to overhaul their diet.  There is a lot of information out there stating the hundreds of products that are not a healthy choice, and that can be too much for some people to jump in head first and change everything right away.  I encourage people to start somewhere.  A simple way is to start becoming a label reader.  Know what is in your food and how it affects your health.

I well remember the days when I gave no thought to my food and what it contained.  I assumed all food companies would only use ingredients that were safe and with my best interest in mind.  About 12 years ago I found out I was wrong!

I”ll share 3 food ingredients that I first started removing from my diet.  I believe this is a first, simple step to improving your health for the better!

#1 Aspartame

At the age of 15 I found out I had hypoglycemia.  The doctors of course told me to avoid sugar and instead online casino use artificial sweeteners.  Before I discovered the harm of artificial sweeteners, I consumed many products that contained aspartame.  Little did I know just how much worse aspartame was for my health than regular sugar.

According to Sweet Poison, aspartame has been linked to 92 harmful side effects.  Some of these side effects can include:

  • Blindness
  • Bulging Eyes
  • Ringing or buzzing in the ears
  • Seizures
  • Dizziness
  • Memory loss
  • Insomnia
  • Shortness of breath
  • Nausea
  • Hives
  • Marked weight gain
  • Death
  • Suicidal tendancies

Which foods contain aspartame?

Diet drinks, gum, yogurts, ice cream, sugar-free candies and more!  Watch for aspartame and phenylalanine in food products.

#2 MSG

MSG {monosodium glutamate} is a flavoring added to many foods.  Side effects include:

  • Headaches and migraines
  • Harmful to brain cells
  • Addictive, causing us to crave foods that contain it
  • Causes obesity by tripling the amount of insulin the pancreas creates
  • An excitotoxin which can lead to: Alzheimer”s, Parkinson”s, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, Spinal Cord Injury and Stroke

Foods that can contain MSG are chips, seasonings, soups, frozen dinners, and watch for this ingredient in all snack foods.

#3 High Fructose Corn Syrup

High fructose corn syrup is a sweetener used in thousands of products.  Despite certain claims, HFCS is not found in nature; it is man-made by changing corn into cornstarch and then into high fructose corn syrup.  This process doesn”t sound too bad, until you discover the process used to make this substance. Toxic chemicals are used in changing corn into high fructose corn syrup, one of which is glutaraldehyde.  Glutaraldehyde is an embalming chemical, kills living cells, and causes drowsiness, dizziness, headaches, irritation to the lungs, nose and eyes.

Also, many samples tested of high fructose corn syrup contain mercury.  Mercury is another topic all in itself!

High Fructose Corn Syrup can be found in products like: drinks, ketchup, sauces, bread, salad dressings, popsicles, gum and lots more!

I do not eat a perfect diet now, but years ago I decided to become a label reader.  I read the labels of everything we eat and eliminate food additives that seemed to do the most damage to the body.  I am still working on eliminating more harmful ingredients one by one to feed my family only the best foods that we can afford.  I cannot afford an all-organic, raw diet, but I can find better alternatives to the many toxic products on the shelves.

What are some of the food ingredients you avoid?

This is the writings of:

  1. Jill, you always seem to have the answers! Thank you for sharing and I’ll try to start doing better at reading labels. Labels just scare me as I have no idea what in the world they’re trying to tell me…or NOT tell me!

  2. I love the simple way you put needful information our there. We are in the process of eliminating Aspartame from our diet. HFCS and MSG will be up there on the list for us. We are also becoming label readers since our Daniel Fast in January. We are taking it slowly, but steadily. Thank you for the information and all of the research you put into sharing it with us.

  3. i think i have the one listed above pretty much under control with very few exceptions, but coming in a very close fourth on this list are nitrates/nitrites. i’m finding those are much more difficult of eliminate :/

  4. Trying to jump in and overhaul your health in a day (or week or year!) is way too overwhelming. I love simple steps like this that make such a huge difference in your health!

  5. This is helpful! I eliminated aspertame and MSG some time ago, but high fructose corn syrup seems to be everywhere! I keep hoping that as more and more people become aware of how damaging it can be, there will be more pressure on food producers to stop using it. My husband and I have also become a lot more conscious of some of the dyes used in foods and we’re trying to cut those out.

  6. Hi Jill,

One of the products I am having a hard time to replace is Hershey’s syrup. Does your recipe taste like Hershey’s?
    Thank you.

  7. Great post Jill! I agree with a previous response that overhauling how you eat all at once would be really difficult. You have to change the way you’re eating or find alternatives- neither of which is easy to do. We’re at a stage where I honestly don’t buy a product if it has more than 2 or 3 ingredients. Our latest item to cut out are GMOs. That means that since they’re not labeled, I have to become educated on which foods have a possibility of being GMed and cut those out or find organic alternatives. The very first thing that we cut out a long time ago when we started changing our eating habits were trans fats.
Thank you for this post and helping more people to get started with changing their eating habits!

  8. The only thing with aspartame left in our diet is that darn sugar-free lemonade mix (generic crystal light). My hubby and kids drink that instead of soda. Working on MSG and artificial dyes, really doing some good label reading and if financially feasible, choosing the fewer-preservatives, fewer ingredients option. I am having trouble with high fructose corn syrup… if there are essentially identical products at similar prices, I will choose the one without high fructose corn syrup most of the time. It is all so overwhelming… I can’t even begin to think about going all organic or non-GMO, and the cost differences are staggering!! I appreciate these small simple steps that can help 🙂

  9. Can you tell me if it’s okay to burn eucalyptus oil when pregnant?

  10. Also which oils are safe to burn in the home while pregnant?
