Recipe Collection: Spicy Chicken Sandwiches

Before focusing on eating real food, we loved going to Wendy’s and getting spicy chicken sandwiches.  Now, since we don’t eat fast food very often, we haven’t had a Wendy’s sandwich in quite some time.   However, in 2010, I had a hankering, so I decided to recreate them, at home, with whole-food ingredients!

They were delicious.  The warm toasted buns and the juicy, well-seasoned, spicy fried chicken.   This recipe will have you telling the kids, “We have Wendy’s at home,” and actually mean it!  My whole family enjoyed this recipe, and I hope you will, too!

Spicy Chicken Sandwiches

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb. chicken breast, cut into 4 – 6 thin slices
  • 1 cup sprouted flour
  • 1/2 tsp. parsley
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/4 tsp. black pepper
  • 1/4 tsp. cayenne pepper (more or less to taste)
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup cream
  • 1/4 cup chili or red pepper sauce
  • Oil for frying (lard, beef tallow, coconut oil, or palm oil — not vegetable oil or shortening!)
  • Buns of choice

Directions:

Step 1: Mix the flour and spices together in a medium bowl.

Step 2: In another bowl, mix cream, egg, and pepper sauce.  You can add more or less pepper sauce to taste; this is moderately spicy (but less spicy than Wendy’s chicken sandwich).  I’d probably add more next time.

Step 3: Heat the oil over medium-high heat in a large frying pan, about 1/2″ deep.

Step 4: Dip the chicken into flour, then into the cream mixture, and back into the flour.

Step 5: Fry over medium heat for 7 – 8 minutes per side until the outside is golden brown and the chicken is cooked through.

Step 6: Remove the chicken to a plate covered with a towel to drain and cool.

Step 7: When ready to serve, place the chicken on the buns and top with lettuce, tomato, cheese, homemade mayo, barbecue sauce, or other toppings as desired.

This spicy chicken sandwich recipe pairs perfectly with some seasoned fries.  If you want to get the full fast-food-at-home effect, you can even make a Shamrock (Mint) Milkshake.

If you like spicy chicken sandwiches, what do you serve them with?

  1. These sound really yummy! I've never had the Wendy's version, but I'm sure these will be much better anyway! 🙂

  2. This sounds delicious! One question though. What is chili or red pepper sauce? Is that like tabasco?

  3. I make popcorn chicken in a similar way. For the spices, though, I use a creole seasoning mix (no MSG/other strange ingredients, just the spices) with self-rising flour and for the liquid I just do buttermilk. They taste great on biscuits with honey (seriously! My husband and I call them "Honey Cajun Chicken Biscuits") or on a salad. Yum!

  5. These are delicious, Kate! Although I had mine stick in the pan…totally user error because I stink at frying stuff. Still…delish! 🙂
